Mother Nature's gift to Citrus County is the Chassahowitzka River. The Chassahowitzka River is unlike any other river in Citrus County. No man made sea walls, no marinas and no houses. Just pure nature and the occasional cabin. With an abundance of plant life lining its shores, it is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and a haven for birders.
Captain Ken Luther, owner of Chassahowitzka River Wildlife Tours, has been offering guided tours on this primitive and unspoiled river for over 16 years. As an experienced guide and wildlife authority, Captain Ken will converge upon the basking alligator and the frolicking otters as you enter the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. While explaining the history of the river, he won't let you miss the soaring American Bald Eagle, nor the osprey crashing into the water to retrieve it's mullet dinner. Deer, wild hogs, raccoons, dolphins, and of course, manatees are common sightings on this beautiful river. Over 250 species of wintering and resident birds fill the skies and shorelines.
